The short answer
Empty the feeder, open it fully, clean the reservoir and ports, rinse thoroughly, and inspect it before refilling. Follow the model’s care instructions and current local bird-feeding guidance.
Make a cleaning station
Keep a dedicated brush with the feeder supplies. Place the small parts in a tray so that seals and caps are not lost. Take a photograph of the first disassembly if the arrangement is not obvious.
Inspect hidden places
Check port openings, threads, and the underside of the lid. A clear reservoir does not necessarily mean the feeding openings are clean. If a part cannot be reached, that limitation belongs on your replacement-feeder checklist.
Refill for the next check
Use an amount you can inspect and replace, rather than automatically filling the maximum capacity. Record your last cleaning on a calendar. During warm weather, review the condition more often; do not use a calendar interval as permission to leave spoiled nectar in place.
