The short answer

Map how squirrels reach the food, then remove bypasses and consider a properly installed baffle or weight-activated design. A barrier is only useful when the route actually passes through it.

Draw the approach

Stand back and list branches, rails, roofs, hanging cords, and nearby structures. Check the manufacturer’s clearance instructions for any feeder or baffle you use. Do not treat a single distance rule as a guarantee for every arrangement.

Choose a non-harmful response

Focus on access and placement. Avoid sticky coatings or improvised traps. A feeder’s failure to exclude squirrels is a reason to revise the setup, not to escalate to a harmful intervention.

Test one adjustment

Change one route at a time and observe. Record what the animal does rather than simply whether the feeder is empty. If you buy a mechanism, note its model and settings so a future comparison is meaningful.
